1870 United States Census
|
The United State Census of 1870 was the ninth United States Census. Conducted by the Census Bureau in June 1870, the 1870 Census was the first census to provide detailed information on the black population, only years after the culmination of the Civil War when slaves were granted freedom. The population was said to be 38,555,983 individuals, a 22.62% increase since 1860. The 1870 Census’ population estimate is controversial, as many believed it underestimated the true population numbers, especially in New York and Pennsylvania. Contents
Census Act of 1850Under the Census Act of 1850, two new structural changes during the 1870 Census occurred: marshals had to return the completed population questionnaire to the Census Office in September and penalties for refusing to reply to enumerator questions were extended to encompass every question on the questionnaires. Excerpt: These are tables of congressional delegations from Virginia to the United States Senate and United States House of Representatives . Virginia has undergone so many demographic changes that in some cases, a district often is not a direct continuation of the same numbered district before reapportionment . For example, the current 7th District covers roughly the same geographic area of what was the 3rd District prior to redistricting after the 1990 Census. Additionally, after the separation of West Virginia in 1863, Virginia lost two seats (however, during the Civil War and Reconstruction era, the Virginia congressional delegation was not seated). Following the 1860 census and the separation of West Virginia, two seats were eliminated, leaving Virginia with 9 seats. For most of this decade, however, Virginian representatives were not seated in Congress because of Virginia's secession in the Civil War. Following the 1870 census, two seats were eliminated, leaving Virginia with 9 seats. After the 1880 census, Virginia gained one seat. For the 48th Congress, a new at-large seat was added to the 9 districts. ... More: Antique United States Blind Map Texas Florida Census
