How can a Canadian citizen work in the US? How long will it take to get a working visa?
Q. What if the person marry a US citizen for love? Can that US citizen help the Canadian citizen a working visa quicker? And how long will it take..
Asked by MC - Wed Sep 12 03:27:59 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A skilled Canadian can get a TN visa very quickly because of NAFTA. Otherwise, it's almost impossible, except through marriage, in which case it's again very quick. In both cases, it's likely to take a few months.

Canadian citizen may want to work in the US after graduating. What do I need?
Q. I am a Canadian Citizen thinking about working in the US after graduating from University. I am wondering what type of certification I will need to enable that. Do I need a passport? A work visa? Am I allowed to visit for conferences and trips if I don't have either?
Asked by San - Mon Mar 31 19:10:48 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can drive to the US until about summer 2009 with a government issued photo ID such as your driver's license and your birth certificate to prove citizenship. If you are flying you need a passport. You can visit the US for conferences and trips and stay for as long as six months and no visa is required, but you cannot work in the US. In order to work in the US you need what is commonly called a "green card". There are a variety of routes to qualify for a green card and a number of different types of work visas. Here is a site to get you started. Best of luck with your plans.

How does a Canadian citizen living in the U.S obtain a certified copy of their birth certificate?
Q. I need a certified copy of my Dad's birth certificate (who is a Canadian citizen) to get my own proof of citizenship of Canada. (I was born, and live in the U.S) But he lives in the U.S also and I have discovered that notary public cannot make certified copies of birth or death certificates. I read that to get your birth certificate you have to go to your county of birth. Is there a way for my Dad to get his certificate without having to travel to Canada?

What happens to a Canadian citizen if they import goods without paying Duty?
Q. If a Canadian citizen buys goods in the US and brings them across the Canadian border under the shipper's authority without declaring the goods to Customs, what are the consequences? The citizen intends to re-sell the goods they purchased in the US.
Asked by Kerie K - Sat Aug 16 04:34:52 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There's a lot of variables. The penalties will be harshest if the goods are controlled like alcohol or tobacco. If you're audited by the CRA or Customs you'll have to provide copies of invoices. You'll be fined the duty, a penalty, and if the situation is serious (large dollar amount or long period of time that this has happened) you and the seller may face jail time.

Can a US citizen marry a Canadian citizen and reside in Canada?
Q. I am a US citizen, looking to marry a Canadian man and reside in Canada. What I've come across tells me this is almost impossible. How would I get a visa to stay there, and what is needed in order to do such? It's all very stressing as I've tried to pull up as much information as I possibly could. Though getting absolutely no where with that. I had to wonder if anyone else has come across the same dilemma. Any helpful information is appreciated.

A. It is no problem at all, but it can be a bit difficult to find the exact information you need on the site. If you have been in a common law relationship for one year you can begin the process for permanent resident status immediately. Or if you are married you can begin the process immediately. Here is an answer I did earlier today to almost the exact same question, except that it was a Canadian woman marrying an American man and he was coming with her to Canada. (I will change the pronouns to make it clearer for you :) You will have to go through an immigration process and he will have to sponsor you to get your permanent resident status. In other words he has to agree to support you financially, pay for any medical bills, etc.… [cont.]

if a Canadian citizen want to marry a Russian woman, what would have to happen for her to be Canadian citizen?
Q. So a Canadian citizen is want to marry Russian woman, does it cost money for her to become a Canadian Citizen?
Asked by hlc - Sun Oct 28 11:45:49 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It takes money and years. Before she could become a Canadian citizen, she must become a Canadian permanent resident. The Canadian husband can sponsor her permanent residency application living in or out of Canada. Once that application is approved, she must "land" at a Canadian port of entry to become a permanent resident. To become a Canadian citizen, she must reside in Canada for 3 years out of the past 4 years from the date of her citizenship application. She must pass a knowledge test to become a citizen.

Can a Canadian citizen open a bank account in the USA?
Q. If so what sort of info do I need? I don't have a social security obviously, as I am a Canadian Citizen. Can I open a US bank account with a passport, and/or credit card?
Asked by dommn8r - Fri Mar 16 13:13:25 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, you can. Whenever a foreigner opens a US bank account, the bank will have you complete a w-9 form. This form states that you are a foreigner. To reward you for your honesty, the IRS will rip off 30% of the interest earned by your account. The bank has the responsibility to withhold this and forward it to the IRS, so you don't have to do anything. Since the IRS is so generous and such a magnanimous entity, they have most generously allowed you NOT to file a US income tax return. So, you have no obligation to file anything, as long as you don't make the terrible mistake of becoming a US Permanent Resident or Citizen. If you do...well, that's another story, along with all its associated ugliness... And please bear in mind that… [cont.]

A. You must file the US tax return as the US taxes you on the fact the income is US source. Check with CRA as to your Canadian filing requirement. If you must file in Canada, you will have a way to claim a tax credit for taxes paid to the US.

If Canadian Citizen, can I buy a home in the United States?
Q. Real Estate. I am Sick & tired of the housing market in Canada. I see so many nice homes south of the border in the United States. Am I legally allowed to buy a home in the US as a Canadian Citizen? Thank you.

A. It should not be a problem. You will have to fill out a few additional documents required for out of country buyers (Patriot Act) but other than that it is not an issue. Many Canadians are coming down to our area in particular (Phoenix/Scottsdale) to purchase homes. Prices have retreated dramatically and your Canadian dollar is very strong against ours. So in essence you're getting a double discount. Of course, any Canadian resident can buy a piece of property in the US. It is up to the mortgage company to decide if they will loan you money by way of a mortgage. If you qualify in Canada, you should qualify in the US. However, you have to realize that in general, Banks and Savings and Loans in the US are not like our big six chartered… [cont.]

A. Her canadain citizenshipship wouldn't be cancelled. You have to renounce your citizenship to loose it. US citizens are US citizens until they renounce their citizenship. There are a lot of people who have permanent residence cards who haven't gone back to their home country for like 20 years.
