What is the best neighborhood in Colorado Springs, Colorado?
Q. I am five years from retiring and have decided that Colorado Springs will be my final destination. I have never been there, but will visit in October. I am in need of relocation information including what is the best area of the city. I prefer quiet country settings where I do not see any neighbors, but also access to the city within 30 minutes. Any suggestions?

A. There aren't necessarily "bad" neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, just different. Ages of homes range from over 100 years to brand new. On the north end of town (above Woodmen Rd), you'll generally find newer homes, in school district 20 which is very well regarded. The east side of town (east of Powers Blvd.) is generally newer, the neighborhoods are packed in tighter, but has great accessibility to shops and restaurants. Pine Creek is very nice, but more expensive than other neighborhoods surrounding it. It also has a very strict homeowners association which many of my friends find borderline offensive. School District 20 is the way to go. District 11 is the largest, but is having many funding problems currently and District 49… [cont.]

How are teaching and journalism jobs in Colorado?
Q. I'm currently a senior in high school. I live in Pennsylvania. I am currently planning to attend Point Park University in Pittsburgh this coming fall for journalism. However, I really want to move to Colorado and I want to either be a teacher or journalist. I am looking to possibly transfer to the University of Denver my sophomore year and maybe even double major in journalism and history education. How are teaching and journalism jobs in Colorado. If I am a teacher I would want to be a high school history teacher.

A. Sooo, you're asking us, now, to tell you how the job market will be in six years??? History is the hardest subject to get a job teaching. Did you know that? Journalism is very difficult to break into AT ALL. That's ANYWHERE. (in fact, the guy who told me that was the local Newspaper managing editor, here in Colorado...but he was talking about anywhere in the US). You could teach any number of things, but think about teaching journalism! teaching jobs have, typically, been really easy to get, but this year, all budgets have been cut, and teachers are looking hard!

Which is the average temperature in Colorado during the winter?
Q. Im gonna stay there from dec through march. What about the wheather there? Could I consider it one of the coldest in America? Im brazillian and Ive never been in Colorado yet. Im completely afraid of it.
Asked by Joao Irenio - Thu Oct 29 11:07:25 2009 - Other - United States - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Depends on where in Colorado. If your in the "high country" expect the temps to be below 0 C (32 F) on average. If your east of the mountains (i.e. Denver, Boulder, Ft. Collins, Colorado Springs), then the temps will vary greatly. Some days it could be cold and snowing, the next day it could be 20 C (uppers 60s F). Expect a couple of things, very dry climate and a lot of wind. You will need to drink a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated. The cold may be a shock to someone coming from the tropics, but I think the weather in Colorado is mild. Is it the coldest in the US? Not even close. The New England region, upstate New York and Alaska are much colder.

What is the best ski resort in Colorado?
Q. I am planning a trip in early February to Colorado to see snow for the first time, and to learn how to ski. I hear Ski resorts are fun and I would like some insight on some of the better ski resorts and their location. Thanks.

A. if you are going to be learning to ski, dont spend $400 on a ticket, you wil be on the kiddie hill, for a MAX of 6 hours a day. its just not worth it.as a local, i reccomend Ski Cooper, it is a small hill with 2 chairlifts, a poma, kiddie hill, green and blue runs, and almost no tourists, it is off the beaten path, yet easy to get to. only 15 minutes from historic leadville, and 25 minutes from Vail, ski cooper is great! tickets run for about $30. or, ski lessons, rental and lift ticket will run you $50-$60 as opposed to around $300 for lesson and rental alone. hope i helped!!! aspen is more like 4.5 hours from denver. less like 2. and its more expensive then vail.

What is the weather like in colorado in mid november?
Q. My girlfriend and i are planning a trip to Colorado Springs in november, just to get away for a little while. (we are from northern New Mexico). Will there be a lot of snow by then? will it be okay to just go in my car, or would my truck be better? and just wondering, is there a lot to do over there?
Asked by JuanV - Tue Oct 21 22:52:37 2008 - Denver - 6 Answers - Comments
A. I would take the truck. It could be snowing - last year mid november I had my baby in a blizzard. Then a week later it was sunny and warm. You really can't tell around here. Colorado Springs is ok, it depends on what you want to do. A lot of the sight seeing nearby may be closed if it's too snowy (like Pike's peak, etc.) If you get bored, just drive one hour north to Denver and go downtown to see a comedy show or go clubbing.

What part of Colorado should my family vacation to?
Q. My family would like to go to Colorado over Thanksgiving in 2008. What part of Colorado would be the best for a group of 8 adults and 5 children ages 1 - 11? We would like an area that has beginner to intermediate skiing as well as other outdoor activities. We prefer to rent a home instead of stay at a lodge. Thanks for your help!
Asked by justluvhorses - Tue Aug 14 13:35:40 2007 - Other - United States - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Thanksgiving is a bit early for skiing. Not to say there won't be any skiing, but your options will likely be limited. For a real Colorado experience, I'd recommend Steamboat Springs. It's the most western of the Colorado ski towns. My other suggestion would be Breckenridge. Try following the snow reports at these areas starting in November this year, then determine if late November is a good time vs waiting for February or March.

A. To be honest, I havent found a city I didnt like in Colorado, its got a little of everything for anyone- depends on your liking and if you have a job that allows you to live outside of a city or not. If you like bigger city- then Denver is it. (There are several burbs I like- Aurora, Golden, and Arvada which are cheaper than the city area). Boulder is nice, but expensive! I didnt care for Pueblo much or Greeley. Yes- I also put in a vote for Castle Rock in south Denver. I also put in a vote for Woodland Park near Colorado Springs- its a mountain town that is larger and close to I-25 which is key for me for the jobs. I live in Colorado Springs, near a city called Monument on the base of Pikes Peak, its peaceful here. If you want the best… [cont.]

What areas are good in Colorado Springs to raise my family?
Q. I am moving from a tiny town in Kansas to Colorado Springs. I have been looking online at apartment complexes and am wondering where are the good areas vs bad areas? I am a full time student and a mother so I don't have the money to live in the most expensive areas though. Any input is helpful!

A. I am not personally stereotyping anyone who lives in south Colorado Springs, but that is where most of the crime takes place in this city. As a good rule of thumb, you will want to stay in the central or northern part of the city. Just be aware though, if you buy one of the many cookie cutter houses here you will have no land! I am from Tennessee originally and am used to houses having quite a bit of land attached, but that isn't the case here in Colorado Springs. I would imagine that its the same way for you folks out there in Kansas. Good luck in whatever you do decide to do.

A. Sounds like it could be a fungal disease as opposed to an insect problems - Colorado spruce are susceptible to Cytospora canker and Rhizosphaera needle cast. I've never personally seen either disease but it sounds like the textbook description of a disease problem (i.e. tree dying from ground up). Typically, the majority of problems with spruce (at least where I live) are insects - diseases aren't as common. Below are some links that may be helpful.

Typically, the majority of problems with spruce (at least where I live) are insects - diseases aren't as common. Below are some links that may be helpful.

A. I would say Breckenridge Colorado. I went this past season in March and the snow was always fresh powder. There are many beginner and intermediate runs there that are perfect to learn to ski on. The town is amazing, it is exactly what one would think a "ski town" should look like. There are many condos to stay in there, check out a site called vbro.com, you can find some good deals on a condo or townhome for all 10 ppl. Added cost would be lift tickets-it is cheaper to get them in advance online then to buy them there and do not forget that you are staying at a resort so there is a resort tax on everything from food to clothing. But this was one of the best mountains I have ever been to, and I have been to quite a few!

When do I start calling Cubline after filing an Colorado unemployment claim?
Q. I just filed for my claim 3 days ago and received the preliminary info from Colorado yesterday but there's no info in what I received on when to start calling Cubline. The Colorado unemploment help line is ALWAYS busy. Will I be receiving more info from Colorado on how to do this and should just be patient? Thank you!

A. I imagine you have to wait until your claim is approved and you are granted benefits - that could take a couple of weeks. In Penna, you also do NOT get benefits the first week-it's called a awaiting week- don;t know if Colo has the same

What causes a colorado blue spruce to have brown needles and then lose the needles at the top of it?
Q. I have a colorado blue spruce that is about 4 feet high and the needles at the top foot of it turned brown then fell off. It seems like it is starting to travel down the tree more but I don't see any bugs on the tree. The rest of the tree looks great and has new growth and has even shot up in height this spring. Please help, I don't want my tree to die. What can I do to help it?

A. I have seen this often, but mostly on white pines. However, they do sometimes attack the blue spruce. They are most likely weevils. They bore small holes into the tree, so you can't see them. Here is a quote I found: "Control Hints All controls should be targeted to kill the adults or larvae before the tree leaders are damaged. Strategy 1: Mechanical Control - Prune Infested Leaders - As soon as infested leaders droop, cut the leader out just below where the bark discoloration stops. Do not throw this pruned leader on the ground as some of the weevils may survive. If the damage is stopped before the first whorl of branches is reached, a new leader can be easily trained. Strategy 2: Remove Weevil Breeding Habitat - In Christmas tree… [cont.]

What is the fastest route from Denver Colorado to San Diego California in a car?
Q. We are going to drive from Denver Colorado to San Diego California and we need the fastest way to get there. There are going to be two of us maybe three of us driving and we would like to get there in 1-2 days if at all possible

A. The answer is really pretty simple: drive I-70 west till it ends, then turn onto I-15 south which takes you right into San Diego. Google maps says it's 17 hours, which means you can probably do it in 15 :-)
