What are the advantages of a country adopting a dual citizenship policy?
Q. I'm trying to write a bill for a mock Congress, and I can't find anything on the internet that suggests that a country will gain something by adopting a program for dual citizenship.

A. I know China refuses to do dual citizenship, and that means a lot of overseas Chinese people who gain citizenship in other countries (which revokes their Chinese one in the process) forces them to give up their original Chinese citizenship. By doing that, they can't visit China for fun--therefore spending money there and helping the economy. Not that China really needs help with its economy right now, but it's an example.

How do I apply for dual citizenship for Philippines and the US?
Q. I was born in the Philippines and I have been living in the US for 11 years ( I have a green card/permanent resident) and I am planning for applying to become a US citizen, but I would prefer to have dual citizenship. How should I go about it? Should I just apply to be a US citizen first and then do dual citizenship later? Or can I do it at the same time? Thank you very much.
Asked by cory - Thu Aug 28 23:12:38 2008 - Immigration - 6 Answers - Comments

A. when you take US citizenship, you immediately renounce your philippine citizenship. what you need to do (after you get your US citizenship) is go to your local philippine consulate and take an oath to "reacquire" your philippine citizenship. that's all you need to do as well as pay a "reacquisition" fee of $50 (not sure if it's still the same).

How do I get dual citizenship for my son?
Q. My son is an American citizen, and I am an Australian citizen, how do I get dual citizenship for my son? We plan on moving to Australia for one year next year, until my husband comes back from deployment. Can anyone link me to information or help me retrieve it?
Asked by G2008Williams - Wed May 20 12:08:16 2009 - Immigration - 6 Answers - Comments

A. Because you're an Australian citizen, your son is an Australian citizen by descent. Go to our citizenship website for all the details on how to apply: Once his citizenship has been recognised, you can apply for an Australian passport. Both countries recognise dual citizenship (my kids are dual Oz/US citizens) and you don't need to take any specific action beyond actually having the 2 citizenships.

How can i go about applying for dual citizenship in Jamaica?
Q. I was born in England and i travel to Jamaica quite often, i still have many relatives there including a brother and sister. My parents were also born there but my father has now past away. My mother is still alive and has British citizenship. Does anyone know how i can go about applying for dual citizenship?
Asked by ME!! - Sat Aug 30 14:49:05 2008 - Immigration - 1 Answers - Comments

A. You contact the department of Immigration in Jamica or go to the Jamican embassy in the UK. You also need to check with (I believe) the home office, to see if under british law you can be a duel UK/Jamaican citizen. Probably you can but strictly speaking if you apply for citizenship of the wrong country it could invalidate your British citizenship.

How can i get a dual citizenship between US and Germany? Also what if i married a German citizen?
Q. How can i get a dual citizenship between US and Germany? Also what if i married a German citizen, would i get a German citizenship automatically and could i get dual citizenship? Also if i couldn't get dual citizenship could I get a German citizenship and renounce the US one and just get it because i married a German citizen or would I still have to do all the paperwork and crap?

A. You don't automatically gain citizenship by marrying a German citizen, you would still need a visa to live & work in Germany, you would need to live there for several years before you become eligible for citizenship by naturalisation. Germany does not allow dual citizenship for naturalised citizens so you would need to renounce your American citizenship to take up German citizenship. To repeat you don't gain German citzienship by marrying a German citizen, any more then the German citizen would gain American citizenship by marrying you. Even if Germany did allow you automatic citizenship by marrying a citizen, yes you would have to fill out a load of paperwork. If you marry a German citizen & intend to live with them in Germany you… [cont.]

How long to be granted dual citizenship?
Q. I am a Canadian and I want to get my dual citizenship with the usa. (I can get it through my grandpa who is an american). If everything goes smoothly, how long will this take?
Asked by lynz - Fri May 18 15:54:29 2007 - Immigration - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Are you seeking derivative citizenship from your grandpa? First, your parent who is the child of your grandpa has to be eligible for derivative citizenship, as well as residing for a certain number of years in the US. When did you file your request for the N-600? See the site below. Caveat: I do not endorse the law firm; it is just being referred because it is an informative site. The other site is the BCIS site. Good luck!

How do I go about getting dual citizenship with Canada and the United Kingdom?
Q. I am a Canadian citizen. My mother, father, brother and all the rest of my family were born in England. How do I get dual citizenship before one of my parents decides to become a Canadian citizen?
Asked by cul8eralligator5 - Tue Oct 13 20:32:47 2009 - Immigration - 2 Answers - Comments

A. If your parents were born in the UK you are automatically a UK citizen. Just apply for a passport. You can do it at any British Embassy or Consultate that handles passport applications. You will have to attend an identity interview but other than that it's easy. If your parents become Canadian citizens, it does not override their British citizenship unless they renounce it. Even then, it does not prevent you taking it up.

A. The US does not allow dual-citizenship for naturalised citizen, but the US does allow dual-citizenship for US born citizen. Since you are not born in the US, you can not. The Oath for new US citizen states that you relinquish your citizenship and loyalty to a foriegn state. The German law does allow German citizen acquires a foreign nationality with the permission of the German government.

A. NO ! you can't get Philippines Citizenship by marries a Filipina, you can only get a Right of Residency in the Philippines by marries a Philippine citizen. the only way you can have a Philippine citizen is to legally stay here for atleast 5 -10 years without any criminal records and pass all medical health examination, and apply for Naturalization to get the Philippine Citizen. and you will not lose your U.S. citizenship. because U.S. and Philippines are both does recognize dual citizenship, the only way you can lose U.S. citizenship is to: 1) be found guilty of treason, 2) serving in a military army that is an enemy of the U.S. and, 3) verbally stating you intention before a U.S. counselor. and for your Right of Residency in Philippines :… [cont.]

A. check out this website: Your kid is lucky, she can keep dual citizenship. If you want to have dual nationality you will have to apply for keeping your German citizenship and wait for the decision before you acquire US citizenship. Unless you get an extra permit in advance you will automatically lose your German citizenship upon getting the US one.

Q. I arrived in Canada at age 5 as a landed immigrant and took Canadian citizenship at age 18. At this time, I would like to investigate the procedure for dual citizenship/British passport. I am sure a birth certificate will be required, which I have "lost", 1. What steps are required and where do I begin to apply for dual citizenship? 2. How do I request a copy of my birth certificate and from where? 3. Would my daughter (born in Canada) also qualify for dual citizenship? Any guidance you can offer is greatly appreciated. A. you would normally need 'A level's@ to get a place at a british university if u where educated in britian, but as u where u where educated abroad and us qualification's i think u can apply as an international student and it all comes down to your grades. Univeristy fees and the cost of living is not cheap here but you can get student grants, the fact that u are a dual citizen would only mean that u can travel and live here legally with out having to go through all the imigration.

Multiple citizenship is a status in which a person is concurrently regarded as a citizen under the laws of more than one state. Multiple citizenships exist because different countries use different, and not necessarily mutually exclusive, citizenship requirements. Colloquial speech refers to people "holding" multiple citizenship but technically each nation is making a claim that this person be considered its national. For this reason, it is possible that a person is a citizen of one, none, or multiple countries. It is possible to obtain a second citizenship through a financial investment in a few countries, e.g., Austria, Cyprus, Dominica and St.
