Q. My friends and cousins really want to go, but I'm holding them back because I need to renew my expired passport. Can I go with the expired passport and a copy of my birth certificate to prove i was born in California?

A. It is not the best way to do it, but yes...you cannot be denied entry into your own country. It is against international law. If you have one, make sure you carry your driver's license. (I have not had a driver's license since the 1980s.)

Can I use an expired passport as ID when applying for a new one?
Q. Reading the information on applying for a new passport it says that I can use a birth certificate or an old US passport as identification for applying for a new passport. I can't find my birth certificate anywhere but do have my old passport. The only problem is is that it expired over five years ago. Will this still work?
Asked by - Wed Dec 28 02:31:59 2011 - Immigration - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Yes. It is a government-issued ID, even if it's expired. Just because it's expired doesn't mean the information on it isn't accurate.

Q. My passport is 2 years expired, I'm 18 now. I need to take PS1000 cash out of my account tomorrow, my card is a lousy cash card so I can only use it for atm which is PS350 max a day. Is my only hope to try and use the premium fast track passport service to get a passport in one day?? I have my birth certificate but no other photo ID.

A. You should be able to take the money out over the counter even though your passport has expired. Take as many forms of ID to the bank as you can (house hold bills etc). They should just ask you some questions to confirm your ID so you should be fine. If they don't allow it, ask to speak to the manager but you shouldn't have a problem.

Do I have to renew my expired Philippine passport before applying for US Citizenship?
Q. After 9 years living in the US, I am finally ready to acquire my US citizenship and possibly will send my application this coming December. However, my Philippine passport has expired last August 23rd. I am wondering if anyone of you here have applied with an expired passport recently. Or anybody who heard from someone that expired passport is OK. I can't find anywhere (so far) that says it is OK to apply with an expired passport. Thank you for any help you can give.

Going on the cruise with expired passport but valid green card. Is that possible?
Q. I am thinking about taking the cruise to Caribbean islands. I have a valid US Green Card but my national passport has expired few weeks ago. Will I be allowed on ship? Do they check the passport on the islands while I am on the cruise? Cruise line people can't give me the definite answer. US Customs says that to exit/enter US I do not need the passport as long as I have my Green Card. So I am in doubt. Does anybody have any experience with this type of situation?

A. Assuming the curise starts and finishes at a US port then technically you do not require a passport to take the cruise. Under current WHTI regulations a green card is sufficient ID for travel by land or sea. Since it is US Customs that enforce regulations relating to you exiting and entering the US I would go with their comments which reflect the current law. Your only concern would be entering those countries where the ship docks. Most Caribbean countries do not require a passport for people from the US however you should check with the representatives of those countries regarding your situation. Since these ports get the majority of their money from tourists it is unlikely you would have problems but better safe than sorry. If, however,… [cont.]

A. you might be able to leave the US, if they'd only let you on the airplane. but, the airline won't board you. if you can't get a new passport, you can always apply for a refugee travel document from USCIS.

A. I'm not sure in that particular situation but I have a 10 year tourist visa for the USA and when my passport expired and i got a new one the American consulate told me I could travel to the USA with my new passport showing them my old one where the visa was. And it has been no problem at all. So my advise is to at least try to get a new passport before flying.

Can I travel within Canada on an expired passport?
Q. All of my identification was stolen and I have to fly out this wednesday. All I have is an expired passport just expired a month ago. I can't get any ID because I need to wait 2 weeks until I get it and I have to leave in 1. So can I travel within Canada with an expired Passport? Again, i have no identification other than my passport!

A. You're screwed. The airline isn't even going to allow you to board the aircraft at point of departure without a current valid passport. Contact your nearest passport office, explain the situation and see whether you can get an emergency issue.

Will an expired passport still work for an interview?
Q. In two days, I'm going in for a job interview and was told that I need government issued ID, such as a passport or a drivers license. Being as lazy as I am, I haven't gone to get my drivers license as of yet and my passport expired a couple of months ago. Obviously, I will not be able to get a new passport in two days and was wondering, if it expired, is it still okay for an interview?
Asked by - Fri Mar 5 18:58:12 2010 - Embassies & Consulates - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Depending on the company's policy, they may accept the recently-expired passport as an ID. Or they may not. This is a slippery slope for them- they accept your two-month expired passport, then they have to accept mine which is "only" ten years' expired, and pretty soon, they're accepting anything. Too lazy to get a driver's license? Get an ID. That works like a driver's license except you can't drive a car with it. I've seen 10-year-olds with a valid California ID. And you might get used to rejection, if you don't have the minimum requirement for the interview, an ID. However, you *might* have luck with a student body card, if it has your date of birth on it. See, what they're looking for is to verify who you are. A name isn't… [cont.]

How can one obtain a new green card with only a SS card and expired passport?
Q. I lost my green card in a taxi cab one night. Smart move, I know. Well the only other forms of ID I have would be my SS card and my expired thai passport. There is no Thai embassy in San Francisco (where I live) and I desperately need to obtain a new green card so that I can leave the country in 6 months for vacation. Does anyone know the protocol for replacing a lost green card with very little "valid" identification?

A. Call INS- but you are probably going to wait a lot longer then 6 months to get a new card. Mine was stolen and it took 18 months!! If you can believe that!! Maybe if you get a new passport they can put a stamp in it or something. Good luck- INS is a mess.

How do we renew a lost expired passport while overseas?
Q. We are trying to bring my nephew over from South Africa to visit his dad. He had a UK child passport which has expired and he has managed to misplace it. He only has a certified copy of his birth certificate with him. Would it be enough with his dads date and place of birth on the forms? Also not sure which forms to use? Seem to be going round in circles, he needs to be here by mid November 2010, so kind of urgent! Thanx in advance for any advice.

is renewing an expired UK passport the same as renewing a current one?
Q. My UK passport expires this month. I have no plans to travel to Europe anytime soon. Maybe it will be years until my next trip. Is it harder to renew an expired passport than a current one? For example, if I wait a few years before renewing, will I have to submit more documentation or pay a higher fee than if I renew now, before this one is expired?
Asked by Publius Varrus - Thu Apr 14 12:54:37 2011 - Embassies & Consulates - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The renewal procedures and fees are the same regardless whether you apply for the renewal of a current or of an expired passport. You might need to get your application countersigned and have your photograph certified if your appearance has changed that much that your identity cannot be checked based on the previous picture in your passport and the current picture you provide for the application of a new passport. .. I remember to have read somewhere that only applicants which hold an old blue passport (issued before 1988/1989) need to apply under the first time application procedures to include a citizenship interview.
