A. Yes. Roanoke. It was a colony, but supply ships from England could not make it to Roanoke due to Spain (was at war with). For three years, no contact with England, and no incoming supplies, the English ships finally came. When they arrived, they found nobody. All the supplies were still left, houses still there. No signs of a massive battle. It was as if they had all disappeared. Only one clue permeated the mystery: a carving on a tree. Something that could lead to the nearby Indian tribe. Historians today still debate over what happened. Some say that they left and joined the nearby Indians due to a lack of supplies. Some say that the blood line had simply merged into the Indians after years of families together, so that no pure Roanoke--i [cont.]

What are the differences and similarities in morals between the Puritans and the Jamestown Colony?
Q. I know plenty about the morals of the Puritans, but I am having trouble finding the moral code of the Jamestown settlers. All that I seem to find is that the settlers looked at Jamestown as a profit making scheme because of the gold that the Spanish stole from the Aztecs and Incas. Please help.
Asked by ryrtutyj - Wed Sep 10 23:18:46 2008 - History - 1 Answers - Comments
A. No, Jamestown was a commercial venture because the colonists were expected to supply the home country with lumber and (amazing to me) glass (which is hard to make in a civilized situation not to speak of a primitive colony) They were supposed to export to cover the costs of the colony. Some of the men wanted to hunt for gold because of the rumors, but that was not the basis of the colony. There was no religious or moral basis for the colony.

Q. How would you have planned the Jamestown colony to ensure a good and prosperous start? Include the kind of people you would have sent, supplies that would have been needed, type of government, choice of a location, and plans for growth.

A. Security - find a defensible spot with a good water supply - should be near the shore so the ship can use guns and provide for quick retreat. Building - close to building materials - wood. Food - clearable land - land nearby for farming (good soil) - fishing. Government - one man with near dictatorial powers or a small elite group. Needs stability and command decisions Growth - Survival first, get the colony going. Find tradable items. New towns along the river for ease of transport and communication.

By December, 104 settlers sailed from London instructed to settle Virginia, find gold and a water route to the Orient. Jamestown, located on Jamestown Island in the Virginia Colony, was founded on May 14, 1607. It is the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States of America, following several earlier failed attempts, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke. It was founded by the London Company (later to become the Virginia Company), headquartered in England. Within a year of Jamestown's foundation, the Virginia Company brought Polish and Dutch colonists to help improve the settlement. Located in James City County when it was formed in 1634 as one of the original eight shires of Virginia, Jamestown was the capital of the Colony for 83 years, from 1616 until 1699. At that time, the capital was relocated to Middle Plantation, about 8 miles (13 km) distant. (That small community, which had also become home to the new College of William and Mary in 1693, was renamed Williamsburg in 1699). The London Company's second settlement, Bermuda, claims the oldest town in the English New World, as St. George's, Bermuda was officially established (as New London) in 1612, where James Fort, in Virginia, is said not to have been converted into Jamestown until 1619. Jamestown ceased to exist as a settlement after the transfer of Virginia's capital to Williamsburg in 1699, existing, today, only as archaeological remains, whereas St.
