Why did the Massachusetts Bay Colony excel more than the Chesapeake colonies?
Q. I'm writing a paper and my thesis statement is "Because of their beliefs, Puritans settling in the New World excelled much more than the Chesapeake colonies." I have already talked about the differences between the two for why they came to the New World. I've also talked about the sense of unity, predestination, and education contributing to the success of the Puritans. I need some more topics to write about and hopefully you can help! Thanks!

A. It was at this early period that two notable events mark the history of Massachusetts, and they were brought about by two notable persons, -- Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson. Williams was a young English clergyman of great strength of character and irrepressible enthusiasm. In his own land he found no rest, on account of his religious teachings, and in 1631 made his way with his young wife to New England. Scarcely had he landed when his troubles began anew. He seemed like an Ishmael -- his hand against every man and everyman's hand against him. He stirred up opposition at Boston, at Plymouth, and at Salem. He refused to take the oath of fidelity; he denied the right of the magistrate to punish for violations of the first table of the… [cont.]

A. One of the biggest differences is why the colonies were started. Jamestown was created purely as a financial venture and the Massachusetts Bay Colony was started for religious reasons. Founding: Virginia- founded by the Virginia Company of England. Was the first settlement in 1607. Only founded for economical reasons and was a Royal Colony (supported by Queen). Massachusetts- founded by Puritan business men who wanted religious freedom as well as money. Founded in 1628. Was a Charter Colony (supported by a company). Religion: V- Anglican. No religious toleration. M- Puritan. They didn't really like other religions. Government: V- Royal Colony. Had system of counties(run by governor and sheriff) that were then broken up into parishes (run… [cont.]

A. The Massachusetts Bay Colony formed a religious dictatorship. Any notion that they subscribed to "true democracy" is simply romantic nonsense meant to perpetuate the idea that the United States is founded on democratic principles, instead of the oligarchy of the rich aristocracy. All members of the colony were forced to hold the same beliefs and act the same way. There was no democracy present. Magistrates may be chosen by the free, but that does not mean they are free to make independent choices. The belief exists that the Puritans left Europe in search of religious freedom and this is simply absurd. The Puritans left Europe because they felt Europe was too sinful and wished to create a strictly religious society. They were… [cont.]

A. Well, Jameston, founded by the Virginia Company in 1607, was settled mainly for profit. As such, the men who came were those interested in finding gold and striking it rich. This lead to their main early problem of starvation: they only hunted for treasure and didn't plant/harvest/forage/hunt etc. So, their desire for wealth got them into this, and, if it wasn't for Captain John Smith, they all would've died, most likely. He came to the colony and introduced a policy of "Any man who will not work, shall not eat" and got them turned around and disciplined enoough to provide food for themselves. On the other hand, the MBC was founded predominately by Puritans in their quest for religious freedom. Though they originally had good… [cont.]

A. Well, I think the struggle for survival would be something they had in common. Creating a new home from the wilderness. And also a fear of Indian attacks, which was a very real possiblity in those days. And while women were generally considered to be subordinate to men in those days, women had an important part to play in the survival of both colonies. Essential female skills like spinning, weaving, brewing, baking, cheese and butter making, and of course bearing and raising the children, were vital to the survival of the colonies. In the southern colonies, women often had to work alongside their husbands in the fields when labor was short. And women were often left in charge of plantations, farms or businesses while the men were away.
