Why is the northeast vastly under represented in terms of military recruits coming from the NE region?
Q. Southern and midwestern states have the lowest levels of unemployment in the nation. How come then so many southern people join the military while the northeast is under represented for their population? Do northeasterners love their country too or do they want the southern folks to do the job of protecting the nation?

Are there any environmental disasters in northeast Kansas?
Q. I need to know of any environmental issues/problems in northeast Kansas. Not something like global warming, but something like a big industry dumping toxic waste in a river. Has anything like that happened recently? Or even in the history of Kansas?

A. Okay, I'm a geologist in Southern California, so I'm not familiar with the geography (not geology, geography) of Kansas, but you have a number of Federal Superfund sites, which qualify as the *most polluted* sites in the nation. Don't feel bad, every state has them. There's a list below (2nd link) with locations, and you can look to see if they're in the northeastern part of Kansas. The bottom link has LOTS of data, but because it has LOTS of data, it is very slow to load. But it's there, if you're patient. The third link is where you can find every Superfund site by state, if you're interested. The first link is just a simple explanation of what Superfund is.

Is there affordable land for sale in the Northeast?
Q. I'm interested in purchasing land in New York or some other state in the Northeast and was curious what were good locations. Doesen't have to be a lot of land either, I'm content with at least 1 acre, but would love 10 or more acres to build a home. I'm willing to consider more northern states such as Maine, and even Minnesota (I know that it isn't really northeast, but just saying I'd consider it) Looking forward to hearing some suggestions. And don't mention Yahoo Real Estate or some other Realtor website please, because I've been using websites, I just want a person's personal opinion.

Q. Preferably northeast Ohio/Cleveland area/Cuyahoga County or surrounding counties. I already know about Lake Erie (however, hidden spots there not well-known to the public would be great suggestions!), Brandywine Falls, and the Metroparks in general. Any abandoned places, cool waterfalls, weird stuff, or peaceful little havens? ALSO: Free or cheap suggestions only!

How many US military bases are located in the Northeast US compared to the rest of the country?
Q. Not including Washington DC, there seems to be a small number of military bases located in the NYC/ NJ metro, PA, and Northeast part of the US compared to the rest of the continental US. I'm wondering if this is because of increasing real estate prices or if the US military would rather train in warmer climates due to heating bills. Just a thought, not trying to make any points here.
Asked by jback - Thu Nov 29 15:04:04 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Modern military bases need LOTS of room with few neighbors. The New England / Northeast has very little of that left that isn't already a park or preserve; except in areas with really challenging winter weather. The various base closing regimes quickly chose most small bases and those that had been surrounded by non-military development. I agree that most are now located in areas whose weather allows year-round training.

How come Northeast Asians don't have bright colored hair even if they have the same climate as europe?
Q. How come Northeast Asians don't have bright colored hair even if they have the same climate as europe? I dont get it. People near the equator have more melanin, hence black hair and dark skin. Europeans are far north and since there are no sunlight they evoved light skin and bright hair. But Northeast asians have a similiar climate to europe... Why then did they not evolve bright colored hair?
Asked by La Ultima Mandala Mata - Mon Nov 26 02:02:23 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The light colored hair of Northern Europeans is the result of what is called founder effect. The population that first settled in that area happened to have the genes for light colored hair and eyes. Because they suffered no ill-effects from these traits (as they might have in the tropics, due to increased chance of UV damage), light hair and eyes persisted and spread in the population. There doesn't seem to be any advantage to having light hair in northern climates, so we can't really say that it evolved as a result of living in that region. Northeast Asians do not tend to have light hair merely because their original ancestral population did not have the genes for light hair.

What are some good herbs to grow in this Northeast rain?
Q. Because of the recent record breaking amount of rain in the Northeast, and the unusual summer cold, it has been more than difficult to grow the pots of White Sage I have been working on. Does anyone know of a nice herb that would do well in this cold, wet environment?
Asked by Emily - Mon Jul 20 20:47:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I live in upstate New York where we are having a similar cool wet summer. My cilantro, dill, oregano, mint, and basil are all doing well. The only herb that is having a problem is my rosemary, in part because the pot I put it in is not draining properly. There has been plenty of sun for herbs. If you have these herbs in pots, make sure they can fully drain.

Q. Where can I find a responsible AKC breeder in the northeast who will sell me a boxer puppy without its tail docked. My wife refuses to get a dog without its full tail. Popular in Europe, but unable to find in the states.
Asked by James Garlock - Sat Oct 31 19:30:34 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I would recommend contacting breeders who are members of the ABC and let them know what you're looking for. You might not be successful, though, because the decision to dock tails is done at a few days of age, far too early to be able to tell "pet quality" from "show quality" (barring complete mismarks). They might be able to refer you to other resources, though.

Asked by L for Love - Fri Feb 26 19:18:19 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Erie Canal is a water route which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. It was the first transportation system between the eastern seaboard (New York City) and the western interior (Great Lakes) of the United States that did not require portage, was faster than carts pulled by draft animals, and cut transport costs by about 95%. The Erie Canal proved to be the key that unlocked an enormous series of social and economic changes in the young nation. The Canal spurred the first great westward movement of American settlers, gave access to the rich land and resources west of the Appalachians and made New York the preeminent commercial city in the United States.

A. Hi there... congratulations on adopting a kitten! Here are some things to consider when looking to find a good veterinarian: Vist the clinic and look for the following: Cleanliness, courteous and friendly staff. Is the staff and veterinarian willing to take the time to talk with you even though you do not have your kitten with you. Some other considerations to take into mind: Is the clinic convenient located to you as well as have hours that will accomodate your schedule. Ask about their policy for after hours for emergencies. Learn about the basic fee structure. Please do note that most veterinary fees even within the same region will vary from one another. A. Here we go If we consider an X- Y plane, one of these guys (3 mi/hr guy) is walking on the x axis to plus direction and the other guy (2 mi/hr guy) is walking in the first quarter, and his trajectory is 45 degrees to x or y direction. So, after 15 minutes; 3 mihr guy, s coordinate = (3/60*15, 0) = (0.75, 0) 2 mihr guy, s coordinate = (2/60*15 cos45, 2/60*15 sin45) = (0.5*(1/sqrt(2)), 0.5*(1/sqrt(2))) =(3.54, 3.54) => Distance between these points sqrt of {(3.54 - 0.75)^2 + (3.54 - 0)^2} = sqrt of {(3.54 - 0.75)^2 + (3.54 - 0)^2}
