regarding dual citizenship and passport?
Q. I have another question... as it shows that I'm a dual citizenship because my father is an American citizen while my mother is a Filipino citizen. I'm residing in the Philippines since birth and never went abroad. Do I need to arrange some papers of some sort? Do I need to get a proof of my dual citizenship? Can I apply for government scholarships (I'm a college student), or will they void my application for I'm of dual citizenship? In filling up forms where they ask my citizenship is it illegal to answer just one of my citizenship? Can I register and vote with Filipino/American citizenship? and lastly can I apply for Filipino passport (already have my American passport) just like the normal Filipino citizens without additional… [cont.]

Am I still eligible for citizenship by descent?
Q. Hi. I have been asking about this question for quite a long time now, but awhile ago, I read something that caught my attention and it might ruin my chances. So I would just like to clarify everything before going out there and submitting an application form. My father is a British citizen. He was born in England and holds a British passport. While my mother is a Filipino citizen. I was born in the Philippines. During my birth, my parents weren't married. But after four months, they got married and my dad signed some legal documents stating that he claims and assures that I am his daughter. It is stated there "This child (my name) is (my dad's name)'s child." Something like that. He signed it. I still have the proof. But right… [cont.]

A. A child born before July 2006 to a British father who was not married to the mother could not automatically have British citizenship as fathers could only pass on citizenship to legitimate children. However, if your parents married after your birth this might legitimise your birth, and you would be regarded as having been a British citizen since birth.

What is the real photo background requirement for renewing Philippine passports?
Q. I came to DFA Clark, Pampanga to have my passport renewed with 3 passport size photos with royal blue background last September 13, 2007. My application form was given back to me with the remark "change photo". The info person told me that the required background is white. Then why did the news say that those renewing their passports must bring photos with royal blue background?

Filipinos: You can renew your Philippines passport by mail. Did you know that?
Q. That's right -- you can renew your passport, and get the new machine-readable passport, by mail. This is true even though the Philippines Consulate website AND even the application form states that you must apply in person! At least that's the case if your consulate is the one in San Francisco. But I'll bet it's true for all Philippines consulates in America. (And maybe in other countries as well.) How do I know this to be the case? Because a couple weeks ago I spent the whole day looking for the cheapest flight, hotel, and car rental and made reservations to renew my Filipina wife's passport in San Francisco. My wife happened to be chatting with a Filipina friend of hers at the time, and she asked why we were actually traveling to San… [cont.]

If I use Maria will I encounter any problem?Im about to book my ticket and Im not sure what name to put because it should be the same with the one in my new passport. i already went to LA to renew my passport. I told them about my Ma. & Maria issue. They said to put Maria in my application form. They asked for my NSO birth certifcate (w/ Maria and for my old passport w/ Ma.). They accepted my application so I guess there's no problem anymore. Then I went to a travel agency to book my flight but the agent is hesitant of what name to put in my… [cont.]

A. The use of shortened Ma. for Maria is common in the Philippines and more likely the NSO people knows about this practice already. The people at the Philippine Consulate will not be allowing you to use the name Maria in your new passport if they deemed it to be unacceptable or inappropriate. You can show the agent any receipt of your application for the new passport at the Phil. Consulate bearing your amended name.Tell the agent there was an error in your first passport and the name that should appear in it is the one stated in your NSO birth certificate. You can probably show too a copy of your BC as a proof.Good luck.

Question about travel in Taiwan?
Q. Question about travel in Taiwan? I heard that the Filipinos are no longer required for a taiwanese visa if he/she complies with the ff: The applicant s passport is still valid for at least six months. (This means that the passport is still valid for at least six months when its holder enters Taiwan rather than when the application is filed online.) The applicant should have a return plane or ship ticket. The applicant should have never been employed as a blue-collar worker in Taiwan. Special qualifications: (Having one of the following documents) The applicant should have a valid (1) Permanent Resident Card or (2) Entry Visa, of any one of the following countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, and New… [cont.]

A. I believe the requirements apply to each individual. Thus, your wife and daughter cannot "piggy-back" on YOUR visa, and would have to qualify by themselves. [Let me check with the officials here about any recent changes to the entry laws, and I'll update this post if new info becomes available] EDIT: I checked with the Bureau of Immigration here in Hualien Harbor yesterday. They told me there haven't been any changes. Filipinos are still required to apply for visas before entering the country; i.e., there is no such thing as a "landing visa" for Filipinos (such as is available to citizens from the USA), and you need to contact the Taipei Economic and and Cultural Office in the Philippines to apply:

How to tell if a Philippine issued passport is for..?
Q. ..TOURIST, BUSINESS, immigrant, STUDY, contract worker, SEAMAN, OTHERS? What are the differences between these passports? Can somebody be a contract worker, immigrant, seaman if the issued passport is business type or vice versa? Appreciate a link defining Philippine passport types. Please see link below. Purpose of travel. Please note, in the passport, there is marking "type". I got a "P". What's that means? Thanks everyone but what I am interested with is the type of passport NOT the visa. I know tourist, business, immigrant, working, dependent, APEC, student, special envoy, etc.

A. A passport is the same for all Filipino citizens, except for the diplomats and several high-ranking officials who holds special passports. The seamen have normal Philippine passports too and in addition they have a seaman's book to go with it. The classification tourist, business, immigrant, student, worker and etc. are for visa types. In your application, they are merely asking the reason why you are applying for a passport, basically the same as asking why you are leaving the country. If you want a passport so you can travel, click on tourist. If you need a passport because you will be working abroad, click on worker, etc etc.

If you're a Filipino with a British passport do you still need a visa to enter the Philippines?
Q. I was born in Philippines and I lived there for 15 years. Now my mum is applying for a British passport but I want to go back to study in a university. Can I enter and live in Philippines for a long period of time without a visa? Please answer before my mum sends my application forms! Thanks.

A. You can renew your Philippines passport and use that to enter the Philippines and the British passport for the United Kingdom. You can also enter the Philippines with the British passport if you hold a proof of dual citizenship. A visa is not required. .. Republic Act No. 9225 - Citizenship Retention and Re-acquisition Act of 2003 Frequently asked questions 1. Who are qualified? R.A. 9225 covers former natural born Filipino citizens who have lost their citizenship through naturalization as citizens of a foreign country. Natural-born citizens are those whose mothers or fathers are citizens of the Philippines. They are citizens of the Philippines from birth, without having to perform any act to acquire or perfect their Philippine citizenship. [cont.]
